GM, Technology, and Space

Fuel cells can be used to power many different kinds of vehicles. When people think of space research, their minds usually drift to the moon, stars, and galaxies. However, much of the knowledge gained through space-related engineering and design can be found in down-to-earth applications.

"SPACE: A Journey to Our Future" is a celebration of the past, present and future of space exploration and discovery. Having been a partner in this continuing journey, General Motors is proud to sponsor the exhibit, especially as the men and women of the GM family celebrate the company's centennial this year.

The GM family is proud to have been a major participant in the development and success of America's space program. Apart from its unrivaled record of automotive innovation, GM developed the guidance and navigation system for the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, which landed the first man on the moon. GM also played a key role in the development of the Lunar Rover Vehicle, which was driven on the moon for the first time in 1971.

As General Motors embarks on its next hundred-year journey, the GM team remains committed to improving life here on Earth. We are working every day to develop advanced technologies that will spur the imagination, protect the planet, and power the future -- here and in worlds yet to be explored. This is our commitment to today's youth as well as the global community, and we hope this exciting exhibit stimulates children everywhere to become more interested and involved in science and technology.

GMnext.com, the Next Hundred Years of Innovation and Progress

For a hundred years, General Motors and its products have touched the lives of millions of people around the world. It has been a century of innovation and progress, from a most unlikely beginning on 1908-September-16 to a major role in landing the first man on the moon; from the world's first production sports car to the first fuel cell vehicle; from the first modern-era electric car to the first car to deliver the fuel efficiency equivalent of 80 miles per gallon of gasoline; from the first hybrid pickup truck to a fleet of more than 3 million Flex Fuel vehicles (capable of running on E85 ethanol, gasoline or any combination of the two fuels) now on the road in America; and, from the industry's largest test-drive fleet of fuel cell vehicles to the Chevrolet Volt advanced technology concept car.

While taking pride in the past, GM is celebrating its centennial by looking ahead rather than backward with gmnext.com, an interactive Web site highlighting all the above technological breakthroughs and much more. GMnext.com is a forum for people all over the world to join a conversation about the urgent technological, environmental, and energy issues that will shape the future of transportation. What technologies hold the most promise? Which ones face the most hurdles? How will automotive transportation be different in ten, twenty, even a hundred years?

To join a discussion of these issues and to learn how GM is addressing them, we invite you to go to gmnext.com, where you will also find blogs, videos, and stories about GM's current and future technology focus, including alternative propulsion and alternative energy sources.

The GMnext.com Web site will also link you to an interactive digital history of GM's first hundred years. Just go to GMnext.com and click on "Wiki" at the top of the home page. You'll find a timeline and hundreds of articles, many written by the people who actually participated in milestone events such as GM's development of the Apollo 11 navigation guidance system and Lunar Roving Vehicle. And while you're there, you can add your own comments or story to this "living" history.

GM's proud heritage of technological innovation and service to customers and communities worldwide lives on as the GM team celebrates its hundredth anniversary. We hope you enjoy the ride on GMnext.com.
